Surnames:  DUNKLIN, SULLIVAN, McELROY, SWINNEY, SWEENEY

Seeking any information on a man named Dunklin SWINNEY/SWEENEY, listed as head of household in the 1830 Washington County census. I am trying to determine if he would be kin to a Micajah SWINNEY/SWEENEY that supposedly married Sarah Margaret "Sally" Sullivan Dunklin, mother of Gov. Daniel Dunklin. Sarah married first, Joseph DUNKLIN, Jr. in Greenville, South Carolina and moved to Caldwell County, Ky. After Joseph's death, Sarah married a John McELROY on July 6, 1809 in Caldwell Co,Ky. The marriage is on record along with a prenuptial agreement between Sarah and John. According to the "Scrugg Genealogy" and "Register of the Sullivan Family", written by members of the Dunklin family, Sarah is said to have married a Micajah SWEENEY after Joseph's death, but no record has been found of this marriage. If anyone has any information on Dunklin SWEENEY/SWINNEY or Micajah SWEENEY/SWINNEY family, please contact me. Thanks, Paula Dunkliln

They are buried in Antioch Cemetery. This information is according to what is found on their grave marker(s). They were both born in Missouri, but I´m not quite sure of where. At the time of the 1920 census for Harmony township in Washington County they had one daughter, Carry (or Carrie), age 1, and lived at a rented farm. They went on to have six more children, although one died at birth. Five of their children are still living, all of which are still in Missouri. Earliest known ancester was Charles McIntire b. 1818 in Ohio, and married Susan Hurt in Missouri. May have had connections to Iron county. Do you have information related to this group of McIntires? If so, I would be interested in sharing with you.

I'm searching for any Washington Co., MO records or references thereto for Jeptha SUMPTER, a physician, and his wife, Eliza A., perhaps her maiden name was ASHER.

The only Missouri record which I have on them is the following 1850 Reynolds Co., MO census. I suspect that between 1840 and 1850 they were living near Oates, MO. They were probably married in Washington Co., MO about 1840.

1850 Reynolds Co., MO Census; 76th District, page 395b, Dwelling/Family 97:

Jeptha SUMPTER   M   W   44   VA   physician
Eliza A. F W 26 TN illiterate
Marian F W 19 IL (dau of previous wife, Margaret JORDON)
Caleb M W 9 MO
Jessee M W 7 MO
Abraham M W 5 MO
Henry M W 2 MO

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I believe he was the oldest of four children, the last two children were twins born between 1846 and 1848. James had a brother, William, who was born in 1844 or 1845. It is possible that his mother´s first name was Curency, born about 1816 in Virginia. I believe her maiden name was THOMPSON. Apparently, James´ father was killed in the Mexican-American War. The family moved to Reynolds County at a later date and they are listed there on the 1870 census.

I am looking for information on Lazarus and Lydia EATON who came to MO from Haywood County, NC in 1816. The birth of their first child, Henry, is listed as being in Ste. Genevieve in 1816. By December 1818, when the second child, William, is born, they are in Washington County.

Lazarus came to MO with brothers, Abraham EATON and Absolom EATON, whose families remained around the Leadwood area of your county. Lazarus and Lydia left the area and journeyed to Perry County, IL in about 1841.

I am interested in information about where they may have lived, what church attended, and why they left while other family stayed IF anyone out there has that kind of information. This family has been pretty well researched, so I am hoping a local family member or resident may have such information.

They were married by the J.P. 07 June 1865 just after Presley served during the Civil War. Presley's step father and mother (Victor CRAIG and Margaret Jane TARPLEY) may have been living in Texas co., MO at this time, they show up on the 1860 census in Texas co. However, I don't know where Amanda NICHOLAS' parents were at this time. They are:  Thomas T. NICHOLAS (b. Nov 1815 Nashville, TN d. 26 Sept 1903 Minneapolis, KS.) and Zilla MOORE. (b. Jun 1830 d. 14 Oct 1908 Minneapolis, KS).

Does anyone have an index to the 1860 or 1870 census for Washington county, MO and could check for Thomas Nicholas or Victor or Margaret Craig?

I know that Presley and Amanda Smith and Thomas and Zilla Nicholas were in Minneapolis around 1880.

Looking for my g.g.g grandmother, Hester THOMAS, b. Belleview Twp, Washington Co, abt 1840. Census shows her occupation as 'cook'. She may have been a slave to a family named THOMAS (possibly a John THOMAS) in 1860. She later moved to Kingston Twp in Washington Co. Hester's daughter, Emeline THOMAS b. 1854-57 in Belleview Twp, Washington Co was listed in the census as a mulatto - so her father may have been Hester's owner/employer.

If anyone is researching this family please contact me and I'll gladly share what information I have found.

I am looking for any info on my ggrandparents Joseph C. KIRBY b. Jun 1874 in MO and Sarah Ellen VANCE b. May 1882 in MO. They may or may not have been married. They had 2 sons born in Washington Co, MO. Fred KIRBY b. 6-7-1906 m. Mildred KING and Frank KIRBY b. 2-11-1904 m. Grace JARVIS.

In the 1900 federal census for Washington Co Joseph C. KIRBY is listed as the son of Joseph KIRBY (b. Sep 1829 Ireland) and Sarah A. (b. Feb. 1839 in Indiana). There is also a John William KIRBY b. Sep 1869, MO listed as their son. This is all I know about the KIRBYs.

Sarah Ellen VANCE had sisters Elizabeth who married a MEYERS and Agnes who married a JARVIS (all in Washington Co). William VANCE and Elijah VANCE were Sarah's brothers. Sarah Ellen VANCE had at least 2 more children (besides the KIRBY boys) Helen and Ellen DEVINE. Sarah signed her name Mrs. Sarah E. COMPTON on Fred's marriage certificate (10-18-1926).

Sarah died as Sarah Ellen TEDDER in April of 1967 in Potosi, MO.

Was Belleview once a part of Washington County? One other question:  Is the White Funeral Home at Caladonia, MO still there? In September, at the Missouri Archives in Jefferson City, I came across a book "White Funeral Home Register, Caladonia, MO Sept. 8, 1907-Oct. 1924." On page 12 an entry says "Mrs. Kirkpatrick, died of old age on Feb. 20, 1914. Ordered by Walter Farley."

Mrs. Kirkpatrick could be my great great grandmother, Margaret Jane HUGHES, who married David W. KIRKPATRICK in Washington County in 1859. The last record I can find of her was the 1910 Belgrade Township, Washington County, Missouri Census.

I am interested in verifying her death date and location andperhaps finding where she is buried. Sorry to trouble you, but any help would be appreciated.

Subject:  Washington County Lodge

I am wanting to find if anyone in Washington Co. has any knowledge of the Potosi Lodge No. 39, chartered by the Grand Lodge of KY in 1816. None of this information was known to the Grand Lodge of MO until I told the Grand Secretary of MO. I found this Lodge in the records of the Grand Lodge of KY. In 1816 Stephen F. Austin, founder of the Austin Colony in Texas, was the Junior Warden. The Lodge surrendered it's charter to the Grand Lodge of KY in 1818 without giving a reason.

Any information on this lodge and it's members would be greatly appreciated. An article on this lodge and Stephen F. Austin was written by me and was published in FOOTPRINTS, the quarterly publication of the Fort Worth Genealogical Society.
